In [the section on] sequence, it mentions the eight stages of infants, boys, and so forth: (Jing says:) Distinct from the sequence of the ten periods, there are separately eight periods. The first ten years is the first stage of illness, because those under ten years have much illness. The second ten years is the stage of complexion; the complexion of men and women is at its peak at this time, and passes away after this. The third ten years is called the stage of complete strength, because bodily strength is mature. The fourth ten years is called the stage of possessing wisdom, as whatever is done involves much deliberation. The fifth ten years is called the stage of mindfulness, because one remembers the gains and losses of one's own affairs. The sixth ten years is the stage of declining complexion and strength. The seventh ten years is the stage of declining wisdom and mindfulness. The eighth ten years is called the stage of confusion.
