Regarding the seventh characteristic, that is, 'dwelling in mindless concentration is not reasonable, up to consciousness not departing from the body': among the eighteen schools there are altogether two categories. The later Sautrāntikas, the Sarvāstivādins, and so forth only assert a single mental consciousness, which is absent in the concentration of cessation; the remaining seventeen schools assert two kinds of mental consciousness. Now, this author directly refutes those who assert that it is absent. This has two points: first, it contradicts inference; second, it contradicts sacred scripture. One should formulate the syllogism: 'Entering mindless concentration should be like giving up life (thesis), because consciousness has departed from the body (reason), just like a corpse (example).' Furthermore, it contradicts sacred scripture, as can be known from the text.
