Being able to grasp male, female, house, field, etc., is called the mark of distinctness, which grasps the distinct marks of matter that are aggregated, nominally existent, and various bases. Ce says: Citing light and radiance subsumes blue, etc.; it may also comprehensively subsume visible forms under the name of light and shadow. Regarding 'extremities: there are summarily two kinds,' etc.: this passage specifically explains that the superior absorption of the formless [realm] cognizes the eleven kinds of matter of the lower realms, counter-arising images that combine and manifest before it; it is also added in fascicle 59 below in explaining conceit cognizing lower realms, meaning that when born in an upper stage, one conceives one's own body, etc., as permanent and pleasurable, and cognizing the lower stage, generates marks of inferiority and thereby gives rise to conceit.
