In the first: Question: Why is wholesome restraint immediately a path of action, whereas unwholesome restraint is called a path of action only when it subsequently arises as intermediate? The Tripiṭaka Master says: Because wholesome restraint is restraining the wholesome, it immediately constitutes a path of action. Jing says: The essential nature of evil restraint is precisely using the ten unwholesome paths and evil volitional aspirations, being constantly conjoined with lack of faith, indolence, forgetfulness, distraction, and faulty awareness, taking these as its essence.
