Regarding the expression “bad moral discipline” (duḥśīla): śīla means cool and refreshing. Because one who performs evil detests what is cool and refreshing, it is called “bad moral discipline”; it is not that the evil essence itself is śīla. An earlier objection stated: “If one explains the precepts as guarding against wrongs, there are precepts that do not guard against wrongs, etc.” This [objection] does not understand the designation; if one explains it as we do now, there is no fault, just as with the name “non-restraint” (asaṃvara). Another objection stated: “The evil essence is not śīla, but because one who performs evil detests śīla, it is called bad śīla; by the same token, the essence of view would not be bad, but because one who performs evil detests that view, it would be called bad view.” The explanation is: “view” means discernment, and both good and bad discernments are called views; śīla means cool and refreshing, and the evil essence is not cool and refreshing, so it cannot be made parallel to “view.”
