The five karmas of the four great elements are explained generally. This is as stated in the first fascicle of the Abhidharmasamuccaya: 'Relying on five causes, it is said to create.' The producing cause (janana-hetu) is the initiating cause, meaning that apart from the primary elements, form does not arise. The relying cause (āśraya-hetu) is the turning cause, meaning that if the primary elements are abandoned, the various produced forms have no capacity to occupy another place. The establishing cause (saṃpratiṣṭhā-hetu) is the cause of subsequent turning, because due to the transformation of the primary elements, the produced forms transform accordingly. The sustaining cause (upastambha-hetu) is the abiding cause, meaning that due to the primary elements, the various produced forms arise in a similar continuum, sustained so that they do not break off. The nourishing cause (upabṛṃhaṇa-hetu) is the cause of growth, meaning that due to the primary elements, those produced forms are nourished, causing them to increase.
