14.401

基云：以滅相及火等二種，望法皆是滅緣，以火例滅相，應成正滅因，以滅相例火，應正助滅緣，皆是法滅緣故，二種既皆不成，故知不得以火等為助滅相為正滅。

Ji says: Because both the characteristic of destruction and fire and the like, with respect to phenomena, are conditions of destruction: if one extrapolates from fire to the characteristic of destruction, it should become the primary cause of destruction; if one extrapolates from the characteristic of destruction to fire, it should be the primary auxiliary condition of destruction, since both are conditions for the destruction of phenomena. Since neither of the two is established, we know that one cannot make fire and the like the auxiliary and the characteristic of destruction the primary.
