Ji says: Regarding determining obstacles with respect to masters, the various schools differ: the Haimavata, Aparaśaila, and Uttaraśaila schools all say that the upādhyāya does not necessarily need to be pure, but the great assembly must necessarily be pure, because the formula says 'I now beg to receive the complete precepts from the saṃgha', so the upādhyāya merely acts as a condition, and therefore does not necessarily need to be pure. The Sarvāstivādins and others hold that the upādhyāya must necessarily be pure, while the great assembly does not need to be pure, because the formula says 'Upādhyāya So-and-so, I now beg to receive the complete precepts from the saṃgha', and since the upādhyāya's name is recited first, he is the dominant condition.
