"Because it was previously practiced": what is attained subsequent to non-conceptual cognition is called "previously practiced"; furthermore, this non-conceptual cognition that is signless with respect to phenomenal affairs was previously practiced; although tainted, because its kind is identical, it is induced by the attachment to signs of the tainted mind, which consequently causes the subsequent attained cognition to also possess signs, and so on in detail. Another interpretation: a purely worldly path is tainted cognition and is incapable of severing defilements. If so, why is it introduced here and with what intention? Here it merely excludes the reason why subsequent attained cognition does not sever afflictions; it is not [referring to] tainted cognition.
