Regarding establishing birth: There is no single sentient being [enduring through time]; each arises momentary by momentary. The continuity of its own kind is called continuous birth. The stages of kalala and so forth are called status-birth. Question: Regarding momentary birth, when a phenomenon arises for a single thought-moment from causes and conditions, that phenomenon necessarily arises. Why is it called nominal? Explanation: In the name it is spoken of as birth, but birth has no distinct [entity]; it is nominally established as birth on the arising of material and mental phenomena, and therefore birth is nominal.
