First, differentiating the meaning of 'element' (dhātu). Jing says: The six meanings here all rely on the cause-and-condition approach of the seeds of the eighteen elements within the ālayavijñāna to explain the elements. Below, it explains that establishing the elements is to show the exclusion of the other three conditions, and establishing the elements is to reveal causes and conditions (hetu-pratyaya). Regarding the meaning of cause, the meaning of seed, and so forth: or, in terms of the actual, functioning eye and so forth, the meaning of the prior generating the posterior is the meaning of cause, up to the meaning of sustaining and holding. As when it is said that an arhat's final eye cannot draw forth a subsequent one and is therefore not an element, one must know that at other times, prior [moments] being capable of generating posterior ones are also termed elements.
