答云：彌勒且順經部宗義，因前果後。如種滅芽辨生因果義，故云眼與眼識，非正生因唯建立故，作此說。

Reply: Maitreya was temporarily conforming to the Sautrāntika tenet that cause precedes and effect follows. Because he explains the meaning of cause and effect of production as like a seed perishing and a sprout arising, he said that the eye and eye consciousness are not the direct productive cause, but merely conventional establishments, which is why he spoke in this way.
