16.12

問曰：經說得自在位五根互用，云何此中說眼有四根用必無是處耶？有說此中約未自在位五根辨處非處。

Question: Sūtras state that at the stage of having attained mastery, the five faculties interchange their functions; why is it said here that there is strictly no possibility for the visual faculty to have the functions of the [other] four faculties? Some say that here, possibilities and impossibilities are analyzed with respect to the five faculties at the stage where mastery has not yet been attained.
