Distinguishing the physical faculties: Jing says: "'This body has form' is the first clause, stating the common characteristic of form. 'Formed of coarse dregs' is the second clause, stating its self-characteristic. Next there are three clauses stating its causal characteristics: 'produced by the four great elements' is the foundational cause; 'the impurity of mother and father, etc.' is the generative cause; 'various foods and drinks, etc.' is the cause of growth. Next there are three clauses stating the characteristics of transformation: 'being caused by cold, it constantly requires covering; being caused by heat, it constantly requires bathing; being caused by fatigue, it constantly requires massage.' Lastly there are four clauses stating the characteristics of decay: the first two clauses refer to oppression and impairment during life, namely being severed and broken; the latter two clauses refer to what occurs after death, namely dispersion and destruction, whether dispersed and destroyed due to being shattered, or dispersed and destroyed naturally." The note says: "The first two clauses are being severed, and the latter two clauses are being broken and dispersed."
