Answer: Because having male or female faculties enables one to sever evil and cultivate goodness. Although the three taintless faculties are in concentration, because they are dharmas essential for deliverance, they are also called 'doing what is done.' Those of unwholesomely thinking what is thought take exclusively the unwholesome grief, joy, equanimity, and mental faculties, because they deliberate continuously in the mental ground; hence suffering and pleasure are excluded. Unwholesomely speaking what is spoken is also like this. Unwholesomely doing what is done comprises thirteen faculties, namely the seven physical, the five feelings, and the mental faculty, excluding the life faculty and the eight wholesome faculties.
