Fourth, distinguishing why three dharmas are not established as nutriment. The supplement says: dharmas such as sleep and dreams do not cause damage to the faculties and great elements of karmic fruition, hence they are called nourishing. However, they cannot embrace and separately generate a distinct portion that nourishes the faculties and great elements, hence they are not called nutriment. Although the divine eye is generated from meditative attainment, it is generated by the nutriments of contact and mental volition within concentration; hence nutriment can generate and nourish the faculties and great elements, whereas non-nutriment cannot.
