Seventh, explaining the four phrases in the sūtra. 'Sentient beings already born' refers to birth-existence and fundamental existence, excluding death-existence, because death-existence is not sustained by food. 'Sentient beings seeking existence' refers to the intermediate existence. That 'sentient beings already born are sustained by food as previously stated' is as explained previously under the subject of food. As for the statement 'proceeding through three doors up to existing dependent on consciousness': this means that through the three doors of the foods of morsel food, mental volition, and contact, karma and afflictions increase; when karma and afflictions depend on consciousness, consciousness is increased.
