Answer: There are two explanations. One says: because it can generate a decisive mind of comprehension, it is called 'comprehension,' receiving its name from the fruit. The second says: comprehension has two kinds. First, that which grasps the expressive function is called comprehension, which exists solely in the mental consciousness. Second, that which clearly understands the sound is called comprehension, in which the auditory consciousness is also called comprehension. Peacefully conforming to the Nyāyānusāra, the former explanation is superior. Now, following the Mahāyāna, since there is a simultaneous mental consciousness that takes sound and the expressive function as objects, while the auditory consciousness merely grasps sound, there is no contradiction. Another explanation says: the mental consciousness taking the same object does not grasp names and so forth. In accordance with that Hīnayāna, two explanations are again formulated.
