In the former: first, that with increase of fault, because it is equipped with three conditions: arising from the three roots, being capable of producing suffering in others, and killing with joy and fulfillment of hope. Arising from afflictions and desiring to produce suffering in others, it has fault; having acted, rejoicing causes the fault to increase. Second, that with fault but without increase: it has only two conditions; having acted, one can repent, and there is no fulfillment of hope. Third, faultless: either accidental killing, or killing out of compassion; not arising from afflictions, it is without fault. Because the original intention to kill lacked fulfillment of hope, even though terminating the prior life produced suffering in another—a single condition—and if one did kill, one later returns love to suffering, yet there is merely no fault of intentional killing; hence it is called faultless.
