In the former [section], Jing says: 'Due to greatness' refers to the five causes—loving-kindness, non-contention, the absorption of cessation, the path of seeing, and the stage of non-learning—to which is added the great congregation of bhikṣus headed by the Buddha. Mentioning the Buddha as the head here takes the Buddha's community: the former four causes are taken individually as distinct causes, while the fifth, the Buddha's community, is taken collectively as a cause. However, among the non-Buddhist groups there are ninety-five types, each claiming, 'My teacher is foremost, and our group is the purest.' Here, mentioning the Buddha to include the community is to distinguish them from the rest. Second, 'greatness of volition' means performing giving toward the aforementioned five types with a pure mind. Third, 'purity of continuation' means that one's three modes of karma in past lives were pure and did not obstruct others' giving. When performing giving in the present, there are no obstacles to giving. When these three causes are complete, that fruition is definitely experienced in the present life; furthermore, this very karma experienced in the present life also brings about the two subsequent retributions in the next life and after.
