Furthermore, the Abhidharma[-samuccaya] says: 'Liberation is the consummate path.' The Sarvāstivādins speak in terms of the initial phase, meaning that when first cultivating, one takes liberation as the beginning. The Abhidharma[-samuccaya] says, 'Relying on liberation, one undertakes cultivation,' because one severs obstructions relying on liberation. The Tattvasiddhi-śāstra speaks in terms of the subsequent, meaning that at the time of consummation, one must accomplish the bases of mastery and totalities for liberation to be complete, taking liberation as the fruit; hence it says that the bases of mastery are the purifying path for liberation. The Abhidharma[-samuccaya] also says: 'When the totalities are completed, liberation is consummate.' Here it speaks based on the time of consummation. Reconciling them in this manner accords well with principle, and fully accounts for the texts.
