Tai says: The eighth ground and above are called "entering the far-reaching ground." Another explanation: The first ground and above are called "entering the far-reaching ground"; bodhisattvas of the far-reaching grounds can enter this concentration. Bodhisattvas of gradual enlightenment can also enter it prior to the grounds; if one is of sudden enlightenment, prior to the grounds one is an ordinary being and therefore does not enter. Although bodhisattvas from the first ground and above give rise to supramundane taintless dharmas and cause them to become manifest, yet through the power of skill in means to transform sentient beings, they do not abandon the afflictions of the path of cultivation, retaining afflictions to assist karma and receive birth.
