Second, the explanation of the *Mahā-Kauṣṭhila-sūtra*. In this, it first indicates the sutra being explained. As for 'Mahā-Kauṣṭhila', the older [rendering] was 'Mahā-Kauṣṭhila' (Māhākāṣṭhila). 'Mahā' means great; 'kauṣṭhi' is translated here as belly; 'la' is translated here as holding—that is, 'holding a great belly'. A great belly has the sense of a great treasury; this is Śāriputra's maternal uncle, the Long-nailed Wanderer (Dīrghanakha).
