Next below is the phrase-by-phrase explanation of the text. Where it says 'inner equal purification has mindfulness, correct knowledge, and equanimity as its intrinsic nature': this means that in the second dhyāna, mindfulness, correct knowledge, and equanimity do not take external objects; within the internal sphere, they are free from sinking and floating, and these three dharmas are equal and cause the mind to be pure, hence it is called 'inner equal purification'. In the fourth dhyāna, both equanimity and mindfulness are said to be 'pure' because they are free from the eight higher afflictions of investigation, reflection, the four feelings, and inhalation and exhalation; hence they are called 'pure'. Where it says 'in the second dhyāna, by virtue of its intrinsic nature it is capable of activity': in the second dhyāna, there are equanimity, mindfulness, and correct knowledge, which really perform activities in countering investigation and reflection; however, because they are perturbed by the secondary affliction of the elated mind of that stage, they are collectively given the name 'inner equal purification'. Where it says 'because the third dhyāna has already transcended them, their intrinsic natures are displayed': the third dhyāna is free from secondary afflictions associated with joy, displaying that the three of mindfulness, wisdom, and equanimity have their own intrinsic natures.
