初云如是三種至八識俱轉者，此正辨俱轉多少。又一意識至不可思議者，偏約意識，辨取境相，測云：不可定判五識俱起意識所緣必是六境，是故前云定中耳識緣聲，意識不緣聲，今準唯識此說非理。

First, regarding from "such three kinds" up to "eight consciousnesses proceed simultaneously": this properly distinguishes the number that proceed simultaneously. Furthermore, from "again, the single mental consciousness" up to "inconceivable": speaking specifically of the mental consciousness, it distinguishes the characteristics of apprehending objects. Ce says: "One cannot definitively determine that the object of the mental consciousness arising simultaneously with the five consciousnesses must be the six sense-objects. Therefore, as said before, the ear-consciousness in meditative absorption takes sound as its object, while the mental consciousness does not take sound as its object; now, according to the Vijñaptimātratā doctrine, this statement is unreasonable."
