Answering the fifth question to clarify the order of abandoning hindrances, Jing says: first one abandons the hindrances of an ordinary person at home; having succeeded in going forth, one next wishes to cultivate concentration and must abandon the hindrances to that concentration, which are dependents, investigation, reflection, and so forth. Next, one abandons the hindrances closely impeding it: because one has not yet attained the six kinds of mental application in the not-yet-arrived concentration, one must instantaneously abandon the coarse heaviness of the body that hindrances the attainment of mental application, and so forth. The above has already removed the hindrances to the preliminary preparations of the noble path. Next, it clarifies the order of abandoning hindrances for noble persons: first one abandons the afflictions of seeing, and next eliminates the afflictions of cultivation; when the afflictions of seeing and cultivation are exhausted, one then eliminates the natural hindrances belonging to taintless concentration; next, one eliminates the phenomenal hindrances, which pertain to the unpliable nature of the five feelings that hinder superior concentration; this hindrance to concentration is a portion of the hindrance to the knowable.
