18.133
If the self did not change in the future, there should be no birth, old age, sickness, death, and transmigration through the five destinies; why do your non-Buddhist schools constantly profess: "I shall undergo transmigration through birth and death in the five destinies in the future"? If the self did not change in the present lifetime, then with respect to various pleasant and unpleasant sensory objects, there should be no suffering, pleasure, or various afflictions such as greed and anger. Why is it that, when encountering adverse and favorable conditions in the present, you say: "I experience suffering" or at times "experience pleasure", giving rise to greed, anger, and so forth? Since it changes on account of conditions, how could it be permanent?
