初中，問增長為以命為因為別有因，若命為因未捨命來，何故有時而不增長如天旱等，將知無命。命若有者，常應增長。若更有餘增長因者，自在別因故得增長何須立命。
In the first part, it asks whether growth takes the life-principle as its cause or has another cause. If the life-principle is the cause, why do they sometimes not grow when the life-principle has not yet been abandoned, as during a drought? Thus one knows there is no life-principle. If the life-principle existed, they should always grow. If there were another cause of growth, it would be due to that distinct cause that they grow; what need is there to posit a life-principle?
