Regarding "furthermore, by all afflictions bound to the indeterminate form and formless [realms], continuing birth therein, and so forth": the indeterminate afflictions of the upper two realms instigate karma to invite rebirth in the upper realms; they are also said to be produced from taints and are called with taints. Among these five gates of being with taints: the first is the general gate; the second is the seeds of affliction; the third is the defiled minds and mental factors; the fourth is the five sense objects; the fifth is all internal five faculties, wholesome and indeterminate minds, bodily and vocal karma, the prātimokṣa, or the external vessel world—all of which are induced by afflictions, or are being produced right here, have already been produced, or will be produced, and hence are called with taints. All dharmas of the form and formless realms are also such; wholesome ripening fruits are also such; here the text is concise and speaks only of unwholesome ripening fruits.
