Ji says: "Observing the cause of purity" refers to what is stated below: taking this name as object, one can know the selflessness of persons; because it reveals that principle, it is called the cause of purity. "Observing self-characteristics" refers to what is stated below: taking the two kinds of names as object, the characteristic of a self is unfindable; this is the object-aspect (nimittabhāga) of the two attachments. Now one knows that fact. "Observing the cause of defilement" refers to what is stated below: through not properly knowing it, this name immediately generates defilement; that is, because of the arising of that vision-aspect (darśanabhāga), all phenomena arise.
