From the text's reply, "Although conditioned things abide due to such seven conditions..." up to "causing conditioned things to abide in continuity": this is the general reply. Take material food for example: there may be eating of roots, medicines, flowers, fruits, mud, stones, fire, iron, and so forth, which causes conditioned things to abide through various gates. Due to material food, consciousness as food is gladdened; because consciousness as food is gladdened, joy and pleasure increase; contact associated with joy and pleasure is contact as food, and volition is mental volition as food; therefore all four nutritions cause conditioned things to abide through various gates. Furthermore, these four nutritions respectively appropriate distinct meanings: first, physical energy; second, joy and pleasure; third, focused hope regarding desirable objects; fourth, the various faculties, great elements, lifespan, and warmth—which serve as the basis for the [previous] three—abiding peacefully without disintegrating.
