In the third [section], explaining ethical discipline (śīla): merits and faults directly oppose each other, each with ten kinds. Namely: because the Saṅgha is harmonious and members instruct one another, one is free from ruining what has been trained in; because of uninterrupted cultivation, one is free from disliking pure precepts; because there is no vicious enmity or opposition, one is free from discord with companions; because one aspires to Bodhi without damaging the factors of the Path, one is free from [flawed] expectations; because one's vigor in guarding ethical discipline across the three realms of existence is steadfast, one is free from heedlessness; because one's mind transcends defilement, one is free from excessive pride; because one can suppress the objects to be remedied, one is free from the impurity of latent dispositions; because one never regresses, one is free from base mental dispositions; because it is not shared with outsiders, one is able to transcend the three realms; because it is the most supreme among all monastic disciplines, perverse prohibitions cannot equal it.
