五、明唯依五地最初入聖，以初近分定已前未有根本定故，彼諸聖人依未至定入於見道，二禪未至定前已有初根本定能發無漏故，上七地前方便不未至不發無漏。

Fifth, explaining that one enters into nobility for the first time relying only on five stages: because prior to the initial preparatory concentration (sāmantaka) there is no fundamental concentration (maula), those noble persons enter the path of seeing relying on the threshold concentration (anāgamya); prior to the threshold concentration of the second dhyāna, there is already the first fundamental concentration capable of producing the taintless; therefore, the preliminary expedients prior to the upper seven stages do not produce the taintless without reaching it.
