In the former, first explaining the conventional knowledge arisen in the initial period: the words 'because of wishing to produce their antidotes, subsequently giving rise to that which is embraced by worldly faith and non-erroneous' refers to innately acquired knowledge (upapattipratilambhikā prajñā). 'Relying on this, next giving rise to hearing, thinking, and so forth' refers to the five meditations for calming the mind. 'Relying on this, next in the path of expedients conforming to penetration... down to subsumed under defiled conventional knowledge' refers to the general and particular applications of mindfulness. 'Relying on this, next giving rise to the discerning wisdom that is the expedient for the path of seeing, and so forth' refers to the three roots of goodness: heat, and so forth.
