Regarding the five characteristics of knowing the right time, Jing states: The first two concern knowing the time when defilement arises. 1. Knowing when defilement is actually arising and generating revulsion; 2. knowing that once defilement has arisen, one must examine its aftermath; 3. knowing the time when purity arises. Within this, one also knows how to diligently cultivate attention to pure phenomena at both times—when it is actually arising and when it is about to arise; 4. attention that equally gives rise to antidotes means knowing that when such-and-such an affliction arises, one gives rise to such-and-such an antidote, meaning that for one of abundant greed one teaches contemplation of the impure, and so forth; 5. attention of the antidote refers to the time when one actually initiates the contemplative practice.
