If one says that because they lack the nature of arising from multiple conditions they are spoken of as having no intrinsic nature, that is indeed ill-conceived emptiness. Therefore, the seventy-fifth fascicle of the Yogācārabhūmiśāstra states: 'Furthermore, in the Mahāyāna, there may be a class who ill-conceive emptiness and speak thus: "By virtue of the conventional, everything exists; by virtue of the ultimate, everything does not exist." One should say to them: "Venerable ones! What is conventional and what is ultimate?" Having asked this, if they answer: "If all dharmas have no intrinsic nature, that is called the ultimate; if among all dharmas that have no intrinsic nature an intrinsic nature can be found, that is called the conventional. Why is this? Within nonexistence one establishes the conventional, provisionally positing names and words to give rise to discourse." One should say to them: "What do you think? Does nominal convention obtain an intrinsic nature from causes? Or is it merely by nominal convention that it is said to exist? If nominal convention exists from causes, then nominal convention arises from causes and yet does not exist; this is unreasonable. If it is only by nominal convention that it is said to exist, nominal convention existing without any referent is unreasonable." Furthermore, one should say to them: "Venerable ones! For what reason are all those that can be obtained devoid of intrinsic nature?" Having asked this, if they answer: "Because of inverted affairs." One should again say to them: "What do you think? Does this inverted affair exist or not exist? If you say it exists, stating that all dharmas, by virtue of the ultimate, are devoid of intrinsic nature is unreasonable."'
