Jing says: Within these seven gates, the first three gates apply generally to distinguishing the three natures, while the latter four gates exclusively distinguish the parikalpita nature. The meaning of the three natures has been variously explained by past masters through many approaches. For instance, Master Xuanzang set forth an essay on the meaning of the three natures, which is the clearest and best. He established the three natures by distinguishing them through three gates: first, the gate of sentiment, fact, and principle; second, the gate of sensory dust, consciousness, and principle; third, the gate of defilement, purity, and commonality.
