Bei says: Generally, when discerning the three natures, the scriptures and treatises differ; for now, they are briefly distinguished and explained in nine approaches. 1. The approach of name, referent, and purity: as the Madhyāntavibhāga says, names of dharmas are the nature of discrimination; grasping a name as real solely on the basis of its referent, that denoted dharma is the paratantra nature; the four kinds of purity are the real nature. 2. The approach of referent, name, and purity: as the Mahāyānasaṃgraha says, the denoted referent is the nature of discrimination, meaning that relying on the name one grasps the referent under the name as real; the denoting name is the paratantra nature. Thus the treatise says that manifest name is paratantra and manifest referent is discrimination, and the four kinds of purity are the real nature. 3. The approach of object and consciousness: as the Laṅkāvatārasūtra says, within the storehouse of the five dharmas, the two kinds of marks and names are termed the nature of discrimination; the one kind of false discrimination is termed the paratantra nature; correct wisdom and suchness are termed the real nature. 4. The approach of imagination, actual phenomena, and principle: as the Buddhagotrashāstra says, the nature of discrimination is not subsumed among the five actualities, because it is imagined to exist but lacks an actual substance; the four dharmas of marks, names, discrimination, and correct wisdom are termed paratantra; the single dharma of tathatā is termed the real nature. 5. The approach of branch, root, and purity: as the Mahāyānasaṃgraha says, all defiled dharmas are the nature of discrimination, the ālayavijñāna is the paratantra nature, and the four kinds of purity are the real nature. 6. The approach of imagination, defilement, and purity: as the Mahāyānasaṃgraha cites from the Vaipulyasūtra, as the verse says: 'Illusion and so forth praise paratantra; teaching non-existence praises discrimination; teaching the four kinds of purity, one should know, is the real.' 7. The approach of defilement pervading purity: as in the Mahāyānasaṃgraha's quotation of the Abhidharmasūtra, such as the analogy of the gold deposit, etc. 8. The approach of the truth-principles pervading: as the Madhyāntavibhāga and the Nirvāṇasūtra say, the four truths all pervade the three natures. 9. The approach of common and distinct marks: as the Sanwuxing lun and the Prakaraṇāryavācā say, that which speaks, that which is spoken of, marks, and names pervade the three natures; the nature of the mutual subsumption of that which speaks and that which is spoken of is the parikalpita-svabhāva; the mark of adherence is the paratantrasvabhāva; the mark of non-adherence is the real.
