In the first set, Jing says: first, weary of noisy crowds, the mind inclines toward seclusion; second, weary of wandering through villages, the mind inclines toward renunciation. Both reside only in quiet places and possess the notion of calming and insight; their minds incline toward nirvāṇa. The phrase 'calming (śamatha) and so forth' includes insight (vipaśyanā) by 'and so forth'. Here, the first inclines toward the forest hermitage (āraṇya), and the second mind inclines toward home-leaving.
