First, in explaining the reasons, there are three. If apart from verbal designations, fondness and joy do not arise toward entities, whereas if accompanied by verbal designations, fondness and joy only then arise toward entities; if fondness and joy arise, then one is bound by verbal designations toward entities: this is the first reason. Furthermore, names and referents are mutually dependent; just as one first relies on entities to give rise to conceptual discrimination of names, this is verbal designation being able to arise reliant on entities. As for "like a meditator... entities can arise," because that mental consciousness contemplates names and engages in the visualization of blue, yellow, and so forth, there consequently arise the entity-images of blue and yellow; this is entities being able to arise reliant on names: this is the second reason.
