'If it were not so, one should establish that everything is the cause of everything': if one says that without the nature of curd having previously existed in milk, curd is able to arise, then in all things such as water there is likewise no nature of curd, so that curd should be able to arise from water and the like; if one says that without the nature of curd originally existing in all things such as water, curd is able to arise, then one should establish that all things are causes for the arising of all things. This raises the first reason to present a difficulty. 'To seek one effect, one should grasp everything': to seek a single effect of curd, one should grasp all things as causes, because in all causes alike there is no nature of the effect of curd. This raises the second reason to present a difficulty. 'One should apply effort and contrivance in everything': if in that milk there is no nature of curd, a person seeking curd should apply effort and contrivance in all things. This raises the third reason to present a difficulty. 'From everything, every effect should arise': if, with no nature of curd originally in that milk, curd can arise, then since that milk lacks the natures of other things, it should give rise to other things; if so, other things, originally lacking the nature of curd, should also give rise to curd. This raises the fourth reason to present a difficulty.
