In the first part: That school holds that consciousness does not arise with non-existence as an object; when cognizing the horns of a hare and the like, one previously saw the hare separately and previously saw the horns separately, and combines them in one place, which is not presently taking non-existence as an object. If so, this would contradict the Buddha's teaching, because he spoke of "knowing non-existence when it is non-existent"; otherwise, one should only know existence when it exists. The subsequent challenge regarding awareness taking non-existence as an object hypothetically wards off their assertion.
