"The path to superior birth" refers to the superior cause for humans and devas; "the path to definitive excellence" refers to the superior cause for nirvāṇa. The four truths are the objects of this superior cause, and there are questions based on them. Self-declaring: as for "confused about the deathless," the Deathless Pure Heaven served by me gave me a command: "If someone comes to ask, you should not answer correctly; answering would produce faults. You should only produce divergent answers following the question." If relying on the Dīrgha Āgama: first, not knowing whether wholesome and unwholesome deeds have retribution or lack retribution, one therefore answers equivocally following the question, saying, "This matter is like this; this matter is true; this matter is different; this matter is not different; this matter is neither different nor not different"; second, not knowing whether another world exists or does not exist; third, not knowing what is wholesome and what is unwholesome; fourth, being foolish and dull. Here it says: "relying on the path to superior birth, asking about wholesome and unwholesome," which corresponds to the first in the Āgama—when others ask whether wholesome and unwholesome have retribution or lack retribution—and also corresponds to the third, what is wholesome and what is unwholesome.
