Under the course of karma of harsh speech, 'toward another sentient being' is said from the standpoint of the prominent and predominant case; for the Abhidharma and other treatises say that merely uttering evil words constitutes a course of karma, or that it constitutes a course of karma only when directed toward a sentient being, whereas toward inanimate objects it is entirely not a course of karma. Fascicle sixty states that the course of karma of harsh speech arises with respect to sentient beings, and this text also says 'toward sentient beings'; however, in fascicle fifty-nine and the Abhidharma, it says that only when defiled does harsh speech utter abuse, and thus says that uttering the words is termed the culmination, yet not all of it is the course of karma.
