The latter three courses of karma are unlike what is stated in the Hīnayāna treatises, which claim they have no preliminary application and that if they manifest, they are the root itself. Fascicle sixty states: For the three kinds—taking life, harsh speech, and malice—greed, anger, and delusion are the preliminary application, and anger and delusion are the culmination; for the three kinds—taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, and covetousness—the three [poisons] are the preliminary application, and greed is the culmination; for the three kinds—false speech, divisive speech, and frivolous talk—the three are the preliminary application, and the three are the culmination; for the one kind, wrong view, the three are the preliminary application, and delusion is the culmination.
