2.86

今順前文，且言彼生處已生位，俱非中如來使者者，如涅槃經說：樹提長者。母懷樹提時，佛記是男，後未生位母便命終，外道譏訶佛記無驗，焚燒母日，佛令使者入火取兒，母雖喪亡，其兒不死，由佛力故火不燒使，佛但記兒不記母，故言不虛妄。

Now, following the preceding text, let us provisionally speak of beings in the state of being already born. Regarding the 'neither' category, [exemplified by] the Tathāgata's emissary: as related in the Nirvāṇa Sūtra, when the mother of the elder Jyotiṣka was pregnant with Jyotiṣka, the Buddha prophesied that the child would be a boy. Later, while he was still unborn, the mother passed away. Non-Buddhists mocked and criticized the Buddha's prophecy as having failed. On the day the mother's body was cremated, the Buddha ordered an emissary to enter the fire and retrieve the child. Although the mother had died, her child did not perish; by the Buddha's power, the fire did not burn the emissary. Because the Buddha had only prophesied concerning the child and not the mother, his words were not false.
