用中，名言種子為先因，法體生起為能建立，生時眾緣為和合，立法作用為果，顯揚十八云：即彼前生為建立，前生緣為和合等。

Regarding 'function': nominal seeds are the prior cause; the arising of the substantial entity of the phenomenon is the establishing factor; the multitude of conditions at the time of arising is the concurrence; and establishing the action of the phenomenon is the fruit. Fascicle eighteen of the Prakaraṇāryavācā states: 'that very preceding arising is the establishing factor, the conditions of preceding arising are the concurrence, etc.'
