The first clarifies that praising the Tathāgata generates a great accumulation of merit. Herein there are three: First, it clarifies that one who is able to praise can bring about benefit. The phrase 'just like making a vase' means: just as a worldly vase is accomplished through human effort, the Tathāgata is not like this; he does not act because of praise from others. However, one who praises him is able to practice self-benefit. Why? The complete virtues of the Tathāgata have nothing further to be added; because he conceals his own goodness and has exceedingly few desires, he does not rejoice upon hearing praise.
