First, among the ten aspects of the purity of the material given, third is timely giving, which means giving to them when it is what they desire. Seventh is giving according to pleasure, which means giving according to what the petitioner loves and desires. What is the difference between these two? The explanation says: The third is knowing that there are those who are hungry and thirsty, and giving food when they are hungry and giving drink when they are thirsty; it does not speak of giving only when the hungry and thirsty come and ask. The seventh says 'giving according to pleasure,' meaning giving according to what the petitioner desires to receive; it is giving when they come and ask. Furthermore, the seventh giving is not restricted to a specific time; giving later according to what they desire is also called 'according to pleasure.' Sixth, giving according to the Dharma, which means 'associated with being faultless': not departing from seeking [the benefit of others], pure in all three times.
