Bei says: This distinguishes that because there are two kinds of grasping, there is the grasped parikalpita nature. One Western explanation holds: Taking the grasped intrinsic nature as the parikalpita nature, if the cognitive mind that grasps is exclusively paratantra, then in this passage it repeatedly brings up the paratantra that conceptualizes in order to reveal the grasped nature. Here, the grasping of sentient beings who understand nominal conventions prior to the [bodhisattva] stages is called 'conforming to cognition'; as for the grasping arisen in beings incapable of language, although there is no active mind taking nominal conventions as an object, yet through dormant tendencies they comprehend blue and other dharmas, hence it is called 'habitual conditioning'.
